SAN JOSE, Calif., US: Align Technology has awarded US$250,000 (€222,000) in research grants as part of its annual research award programme, which seeks to advance orthodontic and dental research at universities around the world.
The manufacturer of the Invisalign clear aligner and iTero intra-oral scanning systems said in a press release that it has awarded the funding to ten recipients. The company said global interest in research into dental and orthodontic treatment continues to grow, as evidenced by the increasing number of applications it receives each year.
Chief Technology Officer and Senior Vice President of Global Research and Development Zelko Relic said Align Technology remains committed to supporting universities around the world that are dedicated to improving patient care in orthodontics and dentistry. Speaking about the award programme, he explained: “Now in its tenth year of funding, we continue to support international research with increasing investments in the EMEA and APAC regions.”
The Americas research award recipients for 2019 are Dr Bingshuang Zou of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver in Canada and Dr F. Kurtis Kasper of the University of Texas at Houston in the US.
The European research award recipients for 2019 are Dr Christina Erbe of the University of Mainz in Germany, Dr Serena Ravera of the University of Turin in Italy, Dr Erwin Jonke of the Medical University of Vienna in Austria and Dr Luca Levrini of the University of Insubria in Varese in Italy.
The Asia Pacific research award recipients for 2019 are Dr Tony Weir of the University of Queensland in Brisbane in Australia, Dr Wenli Lai of Sichuan University in Chengdu in China, Dr Jun Wu of Nanchang University in China and Dr Yu Li of Sichuan University in Chengdu in China.
The company said that the awards are for projects that seek to better understand treatment in orthodontics and dentistry and the research studies cover a wide range of topics. Align Technology listed these topics as including efficacy of 3-D tooth movements, clinical evaluation of surface wear of attachments, comparing effects of two prescriptions using a mandibular advancement appliance, accuracy of interproximal reduction performed by dentists, efficacy of predefined tooth rotation with aligners, effectiveness of clear aligners in reducing incidence of root resorption and alveolar bone compared with fixed appliances, determining the impact of intruding posterior teeth and tipping of the occlusal plane during treatment with aligners, and a survey to identify what requirements are important to patients who decide to be treated with aligners.
Align Technology said all award applications received had been subject to a blind evaluation by an independent academic committee. The company itself determined the final recipients.
