SEOUL, South Korea: This year’s International Symposium on Dental Hygiene (ISDH) highlights the central role of dental hygienists in optimising oral health outcomes. As part of the scientific programme, Curaden Academy, a leading provider of education and training in oral healthcare and oral disease prevention, is presenting two special sessions under the title of “The magical powers of creating oral health interventions: Justice over equity”.

In these sessions, experts Dr Ron Knevel, vice president of the Dental Hygienists Association of Australia, and Dr Mário Rui Araújo, the director of the dental hygiene programme at the Polytechnic Institute of Portalegre in Portugal, will present innovative strategies for improving oral health outcomes through the application of behavioural science. They will also explain the importance of customising oral health recommendations to individual needs, considering factors such as socio-economic status, cultural background and personal barriers.

In addition, the sessions will explore how behavioural science can help identify and address the underlying causes of poor oral health, such as lack of access to dental care, low health literacy and stigma around oral health issues. As a result, attendees will gain a clearer understanding of how behavioural science principles can help create more sustainable, long-term solutions that promote oral health equity for all patients.

Known for revolutionising the concept of preventive oral health within the industry, iTOP—short for “individually trained oral prophylaxis”—is one of Curaden Academy’s core programmes. The goal of iTOP is to help oral health professionals become coaches for their patients, guiding them in developing effective oral health habits. Its comprehensive approach incorporates the latest research, advanced biofilm management techniques and highly effective behaviour change strategies. A core element of iTOP is Touch to Teach, hands-on training that enables participants to use tools and practice techniques to enhance their oral hygiene skills. In Seoul, ISDH visitors have the opportunity to fully experience the iTOP philosophy through the short training sessions taking place in the education corner of the Curaden booth (#101–103) in the Grand Ballroom.

Dr Sunčica Ilija, head of Curaden Academy, stated: “Events like ISDH are very important to bridge the gap between theory and practice, empowering oral health professionals to excel in prevention and patient care. We look forward to meeting and connecting with the international community of dental hygiene professionals at ISDH.”

Curaden Academy is a gold sponsor of ISDH 2024.

Editorial note:

The Curaden Academy sessions will take place today at 14:45–15:45 (local time) in Room 209 (Conference Room North) and tomorrow at 10:30–11:30 in Room 201–202 (ASEM Ballroom).
