MADRID, Spain: The International Society of Minimum Intervention Dentistry (MIS) held its inaugural congress on 29 June in the Spanish capital. Eagerly anticipated by dental professionals worldwide, the event gathered over 100 clinicians dedicated to exploring and advancing the principles of minimum intervention oral care and minimally invasive operative dentistry.

The congress was held at the headquarters of the Colegio Oficial de Odontólogos y Estomatólogos de la Primera Región, the official dental professional association in the Community of Madrid, and featured a number of engaging lectures by leading clinicians and researchers. Prof. Avijit Banerjee of King’s College London in the UK opened the event with a keynote lecture that addressed contemporary approaches to caries management, underscoring the importance of preserving tooth structure and emphasising the shift towards conservative treatment modalities. Prof. Salvatore Sauro of the CEU Cardenal Herrera University in Valencia in Spain was next on the podium, and he delivered a presentation on novel remineralisation techniques aimed at improving material bonding to dentine. Prof. Sauro’s research highlighted innovative methods that promise to enhance the longevity and effectiveness of dental restorations.

Prof. Hervé Tassery from Aix-Marseille University in France shared his expertise on the bioactive dental concept. His lecture illustrated how bioactive materials can be integrated into everyday dental practice to promote natural tooth repair and regeneration, thereby minimising the need for more extensive dental treatment. Also on the topic of materials, Prof. Sevil Gurgan from Hacettepe University in Ankara in Turkey offered a comprehensive overview of restorative materials, focusing on innovative treatment solutions that align with the principles of minimum intervention and demonstrating their efficacy and practicality in clinical settings.

Children’s dental health took centre stage in a lecture by Dr Patricia Gatón Hernández. Dr Hernández, the director of MIT Dental Barcelona in Spain, addressed the challenges of managing caries and enamel defects in paediatric patients. She shared valuable strategies for ensuring better outcomes for young patients, based on the principles of early detection and minimally invasive treatment.

The final presentation was given by Prof. Ivana Miletić from the University of Zagreb in Croatia. Prof. Miletić focused on the application of minimum intervention principles in complex oral rehabilitation. Her insights into the integration of these principles in advanced restorative procedures provided a fitting conclusion to the congress, emphasising the versatility and importance of minimally invasive dentistry. She commented: “I am honoured to have participated in the first MIS congress. The enthusiasm of our amazing audience reaffirmed my belief that the future prospects for minimum intervention in dentistry are very promising, and I’m very excited to see the impacts of our efforts on general dental practice.”

The organisers commented that the success of the inaugural MIS congress marked a significant milestone in the field of dental medicine, setting the stage for future advancement and collaboration. The enthusiasm and interaction from attendees emphasised the important role of such events in promoting a deeper understanding of minimally invasive dentistry and its practical application.
