HATTERSHEIM AM MAIN, Germany: The inventor of multilayered zirconia technology, Kuraray Noritake Dental, has just introduced the latest evolution of dental zirconia—KATANA Zirconia YML (yttria multilayered). At a virtual symposium held on 3 July, four world-renowned experts reported on their first-hand experience with this highly versatile and welcome addition to the KATANA Zirconia family.

Prof. Florian Beuer, chairman of the Department of Prosthodontics, Geriatric Dentistry and Craniomandibular Disorders at Charité—Universitätsmedizin Berlin in Germany, moderated the event and represented the perspective of the scientific researcher and clinician. Master dental technicians Daniele Rondoni, Roberto Rossi and Nondas Vlachopoulos, meanwhile, shared their impressions of processing KATANA Zirconia YML in a laboratory setting and focused on its possible indications and finishing methods.
Scientific facts about YML
After an opening speech from Kazumitsu Nakatsuka, the head of BU Medical at Kuraray Europe, Beuer outlined the journey of dental zirconia’s evolution. He described the steps needed to transform an opaque, white framework material into a translucent, tooth-coloured substance with a multilayered structure suitable for monolithic restorations. Beuer explained that KATANA Zirconia YML, as a fifth-generation dental zirconia with high strength in the lower part of the blank, is well suited for even long-span bridges, whereas its high translucency, natural colour gradation and flexural strength facilitates reliable natural aesthetics. As a result, the material is recommended for virtually every indication.

To create the desired restorative properties such as high translucency for anterior crowns or high strength for long-span bridges, the restoration simply needs to be positioned in the correct part of the blank. The design flexibility of KATANA Zirconia YML is high and possesses few restrictions: the connectors of bridges with more than three units simply need to be positioned in the lower half of the blank to achieve sufficient strength.
Additional benefits of the new material include a controlled firing deformation and a highly accurate manufacturing process, which lead to a precise fit as well as the possibility of fast processing with a sintering time of just 54 minutes for short-span restorations. After sharing these facts alongside scientific data and clinical pictures, Beuer confessed that zirconia is his favourite dental material: its forgiving nature allows for minimally invasive restorations and it is suitable for virtually every indication. As for all innovative dental materials, Beuer is looking forward to seeing more clinical data being shared in coming years.
Micro-layering: Achieving aesthetic outcomes
Master dental technicians Daniele Rondoni and Roberto Rossi then focused on the easily achievable aesthetics of KATANA Zirconia YML. They each presented clinical cases to demonstrate how they obtain beautiful outcomes with a monolithic design (zero cutback), a small vestibular cutback or a micro cutback, and appropriate stains and porcelains from Kuraray Noritake Dental’s CERABIEN ZR range. Their monolithic restorations are typically individualised with internal stains and the liquid feldspathic ceramic material CERABIEN ZR FC Paste Stain or FC Paste Stain only, a procedure that was demonstrated in a hands-on session. FC Paste Stain allows for application in ultra-thin layers while still creating the desired 3D effect. According to Rondoni and Rossi, when opting for a vestibular micro cutback, micro-layering with internal stains and a single lustre porcelain (LT1) completed in a single bake may be the solution. All techniques are easily implementable and possible only thanks to the high aesthetic potential of KATANA Zirconia YML, which reduces manual processing effort and time without compromising quality or aesthetics.
When starting to work with a new zirconia, the speakers recommend analysing its optical properties in different light conditions, comparing it with other materials and using a spectrophotometer to discover its specific optical behaviour. What the speakers like most about KATANA Zirconia YML is the fact that all indications are covered with a single material.
Combining different finishing techniques: High-end aesthetics
According to Vlachopoulos, KATANA Zirconia YML combines the strength of second-generation zirconia like KATANA Zirconia HTML with the very high translucency usually found only in materials with reduced strength like KATANA Zirconia STML. At the symposium, he presented several clinical cases of complex implant-based restorations and crowns that all utilised this new material. Vlachopoulos usually applies monolithic zirconia individualised with CERABIEN ZR FC Paste Stain in the posterior area, whereas for the anterior teeth, he opts for complex porcelain layering techniques.

In a discussion after these presentations, two experts from Kuraray Noritake Dental—Mathias Fernandez Y Lombardi and Antonio Corradi—stressed that the high processing quality of KATANA Zirconia YML is owing to its entirely in-house production process, which ensures complete control over every detail. They agreed that this new product provides numerous benefits for dental technicians and clinicians as it allows for standardised procedures and a reduced inventory and produces highly aesthetic outcomes with the preferred technique.
Watching the presentations of these experts and listening to their discussions, attendees realised that KATANA Zirconia YML is a true all-in-one solution, suitable for virtually all types of restorations and finishing techniques.
