COPENHAGEN, Denmark: During EuroPerio10, attendees enjoyed opportunities not only to immerse themselves in a comprehensive scientific programme but also to attend a variety of special events organised by leading oral care manufacturers in the vicinity of the conference. Among these events was an exclusive evening at the iconic Copenhagen Opera House hosted by Oral-B on Friday, 17 June 2022.
Oral-B’s PeriOpera Night gathered around 200 dental professionals to celebrate a week of world-class scientific education and post-pandemic professional reconnection in the renowned theatre venue. The evening featured a scientific exchange session on the relationship between oral and systemic health as well as a preview of forthcoming innovations designed to help patients establish better brushing behaviours, including Oral-B iO Series 10 with iO Sense and Oral-B iO Specialised Clean, a brush head designed with the help of dental professionals for areas requiring special focus, such as around implant restorations and orthodontic appliances.

Moderated by specialist periodontists Dr Lone Sander and Dr Mette Rylev, the scientific session kicked-off with a lecture by Dr Björn Klinge, senior professor in the Faculty of Odontology at Malmö University and professor emeritus in the Department of Dental Medicine at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm in Sweden, who discussed the association between periodontitis, cardiovascular diseases and cognitive disorders. Research showing that periodontitis is linked to systemic diseases dates as far back as 1911, which is why he firmly believes that there is a strong need to improve communication between dentists and general practitioners for better long-term patient outcomes: “After all, both have a common interest in mind—the patient,” Prof. Klinge said during the event.
The multidisciplinary approach was also advocated by Prof. Lior Shapira, chair of the Department of Periodontology in the Faculty of Dental Medicine of the Hebrew University-Hadassah School of Dental Medicine in Jerusalem in Israel, who shed light on the importance of the relationship between the general practitioner and the dental team in improving the well-being of diabetic patients. He noted that there had been an increase in patient volumes at the dental office in recent years and highlighted the economic burden the disease places on both the patient and the healthcare system. There is a substantial body of research on the association between diabetes and periodontal disease, and Prof. Shapira emphasised the need for dental professionals to partner with family doctors in helping to manage both conditions. “Controlling diabetes and periodontitis should be a joint venture of a physician and a dentist,” he noted.
Oral-B and Straumann: Joining forces to make prevention matter
The importance of the prevention of oral disease was widely discussed at symposia across EuroPerio10, and Oral-B has taken its commitment to delivering standard-setting scientific education on this topic for dental professionals to the next level via its recent alliance with Straumann. This alliance had earlier been launched in Copenhagen with a jointly sponsored scientific session. The vision of the partnership is to amplify the importance of preventive dentistry and oral health education by improving outcomes for periodontal and peri-implant patients. Arik Zucker, vice president and head of the biomaterials division at the Straumann Group, was a guest at Oral-B’s PeriOpera night. He stated: “The alliance with Oral-B complements our efforts and offers a solid ground for further scientific and educational activities that will enable more dental professionals to improve their patients’ lives.”
