LEIPZIG, Germany: Under the slogan “Health begins with healthy gums” the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP), joined by 29 affiliated European national societies of periodontology, celebrated European Gum Health Day 2018 on 12 May. This fifth edition of the awareness day saw more than 40 countries commemorating gum health through free periodontal screenings, mobile dental clinics, conferences, outreach visits to schools, and the publication of a report on the impact of smoking on periodontal and peri-implant disease.

29 of the EFP’s 30 affiliated societies staged activities and media initiatives targeting press as well as social media to promote the importance of gum health to overall health and well-being. In addition, ten periodontology societies from Latin America, two universities in Brazil and a dental school in Georgia also organised events related to gum health and its impact on general health.

“European Gum Health Day 2018 has been a resounding success and, for the first time, a global one, thanks to the unprecedented support received this time from Latin America as well,” said Xavier Struillou, coordinator of European Gum Health Day 2018. “I would like to thank all 39 national perio societies around the world that have officially joined European Gum Health Day 2018 for their great efforts in making this awareness initiative happen, and for their inventiveness in bringing it to a higher level.”

Reports on each participating society’s activities will be published in the European Gum Health Day section of the EFP website.
