MELBOURNE, Australia: One of the most important functions of the Dental Board of Australia (DBA) is the development of standards, codes and guidelines for dental practitioners. To help make information on registration standards more accessible for dental practitioners, the board has now launched an information hub titled “Know your scope”, ahead of the implementation of the revised scope of practice registration standard on 1 July 2020.
Australian health ministers approved the revisions in late 2019 and scheduled a stakeholder forum in each state and territory for early this year. Owing to public health warnings relating to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, however, only the Sydney forum in mid-March could be held, and the remainder were indefinitely cancelled. These forums have been moved online and will be held on 3 and 18 June in the form of question and answer sessions, according to the DBA. To register for these sessions, interested dental professionals can click here.
In addition to having advance copies of the Scope of Practice Registration Standard (Revised) and Scope of Practice Guidelines available, the “Know your scope” hub includes a tool designed to help dental professionals engage in reflective practice. “The reflective practice tool helps practitioners reflect on their individual scope of practice and supports planning of their continuing professional development,” said DBA Chair Dr Murray Thomas.
According to the DBA, as other resources are developed, they will be made available to Australia-based dental practitioners through the hub.
