Smile of the Year Awards 2024 celebrates dental excellence

SOFIA, Bulgaria: On the evening of 16 May, 19 teams of dental professionals received designer trophies branded with the Smile of the Year logo at the award ceremony of one of the most prestigious dental awards in Europe. This 17^th edition of the competition saw a record 83 applications. The award presentation took place at the Pirotska 5 Event Center in Sofia as a glittering red-carpet affair, bringing together nearly 150 guests from the dental world.

This year’s competition attracted a record number of entries from nine countries—Bulgaria, Poland, Moldova, Ukraine, Spain, France, North Macedonia, Taiwan and China—competing in 19 categories. The event was opened by the founder and host of the Smile of the Year Awards, Ulyana Vincheva.

The world-renowned jury, which evaluated the entries anonymously this year, consisted of Dr Giulio Rasperini (Italy), Dr Walter Devoto (Italy), Dr Mirela Feraru (Romania), Dr Rafael Romano (Israel), Dr Gary Glassman (Canada), Dr Siegfried Marquardt (Germany), Dr Raman Aulakh (UK), Dr Monica Imelio (Italy), Dr Roberto Ciarlantini (Italy), Dr David J. Landwehr (US), Dr Alex Ditmarov (Russia) and Ciprian Boca (Romania).

The winners of this year’s competition per category were as follows:

Complex Esthetic Restoration: Dr Denitsa Dimitrova and her team of professionals (all Bulgaria): Dr Boyan Vladimirov, Dr Rosen Venelinov, Dr Veselin Kateliev, Dr Nikolina Petkova and dental technician Maria Chotova

Composite Partial Restorations; and Restorative Composite Smile Makeover: Dr Ani Vasileva (Bulgaria)

Ceramic Single Restorations in the Frontal and Distal Zone; Clinical Case with a Full Digital Protocol; and Implant Full Mouth Restoration: Dr Kalin Marinov and dental technician Stefan Petrov (both Bulgaria)

Restorative Ceramic Smile Makeover: Dr Zhou Yu Ding and dental technician Kunuy Yu (both China)

Pink Esthetics: Dr Ventsislav Momchilov (Bulgaria)

Orthodontics Adult Fixed: Dr Petya Stoyanova (Bulgaria)

Orthodontics Child/Teenager Fixed: Dr Inna Atanasova (Bulgaria) and Dr Dafinka Georgieva (North Macedonia)

Orthodontics with Aligners for Adults: Dr Svetlana Stoyanova (Bulgaria)

Orthodontics with Aligners for Children and Teenagers: Dr Yoana Fileva (Bulgaria)

Implant Partial Jaw Restoration: Dr Ventseslav Stankov and dental technician Alexander Nikolov (both Bulgaria)

Implant Single Tooth Restoration: Dr Ivaylo Pashov (Bulgaria) and dental technician Yura Kryukov (Ukraine)

Endodontic Treatment; and Endodontic Retreatment: Dr Mirena Doychinova (Bulgaria)

The winners received a designer trophy and a certificate of excellence. Second- and third-place winners received a certificate of excellence.

The ceremony featured contributions from DrinkPlus and Cocktail Adventure, who presented their signature cocktails. Saxophonist Yana Karuba added an extra dash of class to the five-star event.

Supporting companies for this year’s competition included the bredent group, Maserati Auto Italia, Galardo Real Estate and CED Adventures. The official media partners for the event were Dental Tribune International and Code Health TV, which broadcast the event on its channel.

The ceremony was streamed live on 16 May on the Smile of the Year YouTube channel.
