SHANGHAI, China: University of Michigan School of Dentistry has topped the ShanghaiRanking’s list of the world’s best Dentistry and Oral Sciences programmes in their Global Ranking of Academic Subjects. Released last week, the annual list ranks universities according to 52 academic subjects in the following five categories: medical sciences (which includes dentistry and oral sciences), natural sciences, engineering, life sciences and social sciences.
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was ranked second in the dentistry and oral sciences category, with the University of Washington securing third place. Overall, eight of the top ten universities are based in American, with one representative in the United Kingdom (King’s College London) and one in Brazil (University of São Paulo) placed seventh and ninth respectively. Japan’s Osaka University was ranked the highest dentistry and oral sciences programme based in Asia, coming in at 21st place.
Laurie McCauley, Dean of Michigan’s School of Dentistry, said that the university’s position as the top-ranked programme globally is a reward for the school’s commitment to excellence. “We have a long tradition as leaders in dentistry and rankings like this are one way to gauge our success,” McCauley said. “But we know that excellence means always improving, and every day I see our students, faculty and staff focused on finding new and better ways to advance our mission in education, service, research and discovery. Their commitment is ultimately the best indicator of our success.”
The Global Ranking of Academic Subjects has been published since 2009 and is released as a precursor to ShanghaiRanking’s Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), an overall review of universities worldwide. The 2017 ARWU is yet to be released.
